Yellowknife is located in Canada, within the Northwest Territories. It is a young city, which developed during the 1930s, due to the large reserves of gold that were found in the area. It is a city literally built on gold.

Most of the gold has been mined but Yellowknife is still the diamond capital of North America.

Even though Yellowknife is a small city, the population is only about 20,000.

Shearwaters and Mallards are corresponding with children who attend N J Macpherson School, in Yellowknife. We have already learnt a lot about their lives: they go “ski-dooing” when the lakes are frozen; temperatures can drop to -40°C; they can get up to 1 metre of snow; in 2008 Yellowknife is hosting the Artic Winter Games and they don’t wear school uniform.
