Cross Country
On a day that had promised sunshine, a coach full of budding young Year 5 and 6 cross-country runners left St Mary’s to take on the challenge of ‘The Great Hill’ at Instow. By the time the coach arrived, the sunshine became a distant memory and the teams got on with the task of competing against other schools from across the area. All the children competing put their hearts into it, pushing themselves through the driving rain to the finishing line, resulting in St Mary’s coming third out of all the schools represented. There were also individual achievements from Michael Townshend (3rd, Year 6 Boys) and Rachel Coles (5th Year 5 Girls) capping off an excellent day by all.

Devon County Finals at Bovey Tracey.
On Friday 19th June 10 of our Year 5/6 children represented St Mary’s in the Devon County Cricket Finals. They travelled down to Bovey Tracey Cricket Club in South Devon and played 4 matches against other Devon schools narrowly missing out on the North Devon Trophy.
They were selected out of 18 schools across North Devon to play in the Finals having won 4 of their matches in the North Devon Cricket Tournament at Instow earlier on this term.
Here is a recount by Jack Robinson.
When we got through at Instow cricket club by 3 runs, everyone was really excited to be going to Bovey Tracey. When we got there it was quite nerve racking to be against schools we had never even heard of.
We were straight into our first game. It was close but unfortunately we didn't win. Going into the second game we thought we could win it after learning from our mistakes from the first game, but unfortunately they won by a few runs.
Our third game was our most important game because it was against West Croft and we could win a trophy if we could beat them!. They were batting first and got quite a lot of runs. When we got into bat, we got off to a slow start but at the end we were getting lots of runs and in the end they beat us by 13 runs.
In our last match we were playing for 7th place against Bovey Tracey. We were doing really well with one of our players catching 5 balls. In the end we won by 11 runs. Even though we didn't get through, we had a really good time.
