In ICT this term we are learning and refining different keyboard skills. We will then create a profile of a British artist. The skills we are focusing on include: typing, punctuation keys, using a word bank and copy and pasting. We will also be using the internet and encyclopaedia programme to research our artists.
In Art the children will be studying British artists including John Constable, Laurence Lowry and Beatrix Potter. They will practise skills such as sketching, painting and mixing and will be thinking carefully about line, shape and pattern. At the end of the unit the children will be producing their own painting of a school scene based upon the style of their chosen artist.

This term Environmental Studies is focussing on geography and science. The children will be learning about the local environment in the school grounds and will be learning about plants.
This week we worked outside for the whole session and started by looking for signs of spring. We found lots of new daffodils growing even though it was very frosty. We then decided which were the important features of the environmental area and marked them out using tent pegs and ribbons. Then we thought about which features we would like to include on a treasure map and the children sketched treasure maps of their own. The Turnstones even hid some treasure for their partner find using their treasure map which worked really well!
We rounded off the session by sitting on our new tarpaulin having a hot chocolate and biscuit to warm ourselves up as we had worked hard all day in very chilly conditions.
PE
The focus for this term’s PE is dance. We will be following the Leap into Life programme and using the skills learnt to create a dance linked to the story of The Mousehole Cat. Teachers from our Commenius schools will be visiting us in March when we will be performing our dances to them.
Music
This term we are being inspired by the musical Mary Poppins. The children will select a song to sing and perform, using expression, and selected appropriate instruments to accompany their performance. They will learn some vocal warm ups and the different pitches their voice can make.
Autumn 2009.
The Turnstones tried food from Germany during European language day. They had the opportunity to evaluate the look, smell and taste of German rye bread, German sausage and German spiced biscuits. Their favourite was the biscuit with the sausage being a close runner up!
ICT
In ICT year 1 children will learn to log on to their computer, print and save their work. They will use a painting program to create simple patterns and pictures using a variety of tools. They will learn to select and add stamps or clipart to a picture
Science
In Science year 1 children will be looking at different light sources and why we need light to see things. They will go on to recognise natural and man made light sources. Linking in with our work on Hansel and Gretel they will have a go at making a bulb light using a circuit in order to help them see in the dark forest.
PE
In PE we will be following the Leap into Life program across KS1 which teaches children physical literacy. The aim is to help the children develop more fundamental movement skills which will help them to access a wide range of activities in their KS2 years and beyond.
