History
In History this term we are looking at famous British people. We will be discussing what makes a person famous and remembered over time before researching famous explorers, singers and authors. We will put all of our research to good use, by making a short documentary on a chosen British figure in groups. We are planning on watching all of the documentaries at our famous person party at the end of the topic.

SEAL for Year 2
In SEAL this half term, we are talking about Relationships. We will be thinking about how we need to recognise and respect the differences and similarities between our friends, how our actions affect others around us and the importance of caring for others. After half term, we will look at Changes. This is particularly relevant for Year 2 at this time, as they are beginning to think about moving up to Key Stage Two. We will be identifying the feelings we encounter when there are changes in our life, talking about setting and achieving goals and how we can change our behaviour.

Geograhy

As part of our Geography topic ‘Contrasting Localities’ we went to visit Clovelly to help us understand what our local area used to be like.  Here are some pictures of our working wall.

Spring 2010

This term Environmental Studies is focussing on geography and science.  The children will be learning about the local environment in the school grounds and will be learning about plants.

This week we worked outside for the whole session and started by looking for signs of spring.  We found lots of new daffodils growing even though it was very frosty.  We then decided which were the important features of the environmental area and marked them out using tent pegs and ribbons.  Then we thought about which features we would like to include on a treasure map and the children sketched treasure maps of their own.  The Turnstones even hid some treasure for their partner find using their treasure map which worked really well!

We rounded off the session by sitting on our new tarpaulin having a hot chocolate and biscuit to warm ourselves up as we had worked hard all day in very chilly conditions.

English

In English this term we are linking our Science topic on the body with poetry to create senses poems. We have been going on senses walks around the school grounds to write down all the sounds we can hear, things we can see, smell, taste and touch. Back in the classroom, we are trying to come up with interesting and descriptive sentences for our poems, some of us are even using similes!
Later on in the term, we are also going to be linking English to our Design and Technology project, making a class flag. We will be writing instructions using time connectives and bossy words to make it really clear to the reader how to make our class flag.

D&T

This term, our Design and Technology topic is making a class flag. We are planning on doing this in time for the Comenius visitors to look at when they visit our school in March. Each class in Year 1 and 2 will be thinking what is special and important about their class to put in their design. In order to make our flag, we will be testing out different fabrics and learning about joining different materials, including sewing.

SEAL

In SEAL this term, we are focusing on the topic, going for goals. We started off the new term by making New Year’s resolutions and over the course of the term we will be discussing how we can choose realistic goals and how we can achieve them. We will also be talking about how to deal with and overcome the frustration of trying to reach a goal and not succeeding at first. This topic will link into the children’s target consultation days that are coming up in late February or early March, where each child will be part of setting their own school targets for the next term.

Science

This term, in Year 2, we are learning about electricity. We have been on an electricity hunt around the school and identified what objects use electricity and why. We are finding out how to make a bulb light up by making an electric circuit and using scientific symbols to draw our circuits. Later on in the term, we will be investigating what materials are conductors and insulators of electricity. This will help us to decide what material to use to make a switch for our circuits.

SEAL.

In SEAL this term we are looking at the topic, New Beginnings. We are thinking about how we can manage our feelings and respect other people’s feelings that may be different to our own. We will also be looking at how we all belong to a community and why it is important to make others feel welcome and included when they are new to school or the class. Next half term, we are moving on to the unit ‘Getting on and Falling Out’, where we will think about what makes a good friend and discuss ways we can get on with others and how to deal with differences between each other.

Design & Technology.

Design and Technology is our topic early next half term. We will be learning about food through the decades. This will involve asking parents, grandparents and older relatives what kinds of food they ate when they were children as part of our research. We will also be practising cooking skills such as chopping, grating and mixing. We will combine our research findings and cooking skills to create and prepare a dish to someone of a different generation.
