Science
In Year 2 the Science topics for the first half term are going to be used to support the SATs writing task. We will be researching night time, with a particular focus on the areas of nocturnal animals and space. The children have generated questions that they want to answer about nocturnal animals and will use a variety of sources to answer these questions themselves - such as books, the internet and a range of experiments. We will use the same sources to investigate space, capturing the children’s interest with a DVD of the planets. The children will produce a PowerPoint outlining what they have learnt.
After half term the focus of our Science learning will be on investigative skills, ways of answering questions, using the equipment and drawing conclusions from the results gained. We will be encouraging the children to ask lots of questions and be independent thinkers and investigators!
Maths
In year 1 and 2, we have already visited all areas of the Mathematics curriculum this year and spent time practicing the skills in those areas. Therefore, the focus of this term will be to put the skills we have learnt into real-life contexts and problems to solve. We will be solving problems involving the four main operations of money, time, shape and measuring & data handling.
PE
In year 1 and 2, as the weather improves we will spend most of our PE time outside practicing a variety of skills, including throwing, catching, aiming, jumping and running. At the end of the term we will demonstrate the children’s achievements with our multi-skills sports day.
RE
Year 1 and 2,In RE this term we are going to be looking at the importance of symbols in religion. We will start by looking at the symbols we see around us and thinking of their importance. We will then be visiting a church to investigate the symbols found there and what they mean to Christians. We will also be finding out about symbols that are important to Jews by using the internet. The topic will be concluded by the children planning and preparing a Christian and Jewish feast having learnt about the significance of food in these religions.
As part of our Geography topic ‘Contrasting Localities’ we went to visit Clovelly to help us understand what our local area used to be like. Here are some photographs from that visit.

Maths
This term the children will be covering all of the main elements of mathematics. They are going to be using the Big Schools’ Birdwatch to investigate how to collect and present data showing the birds we have in the school environment. They will be investigating time by sequencing events, timing activities during the day and learning how to read the time to varying degrees. Amongst all of this there will be a focus on problem solving using the four operations, time, measures, shape and money. The children will be working on developing their independence by selecting their own activities and identifying when they have met objectives and need to move on.
RE
This term the children have been set a challenge, to become good leaders and persuade the rest of the class to follow them! They will be thinking about leaders they know and follow and looking at the characteristics of a good leader. Building on that they will look at some Bible leaders to see what they can learn and put into practice. They will learn the stories of Moses, David and Goliath and Daniel and learn that leaders are trustworthy, honest, reliable, brave and have something worth following. Using what they have learnt they will get into groups and plan and prepare how they are going to persuade the rest of the class to follow them.
Art
The children will be designing and making a flag which they feel represents their class. They will think carefully about the colour they are going to use and the materials they will make their flags out of. They will practice skills such as weaving, sewing, knitting, dyeing in order to decide. They will also learn what a mosaic is and practice this skill.
India
In Year 2 the children have been finding out about India. They have looked at photographs and a DVD of India and a school in New Delhi. The children have written letters to the children of this school and drawn pictures of the Taj Mahal to send with those letters. Here are some of the pictures and letters the children have produced.
