Year 3/4 - Bitterns

Spring 2010.

Big Schools’ Birdwatch

We had a fantastic morning watching birds from our classroom windows and recording what we saw.  The children have worked really hard on this project researching birds and making feeders and this really paid off on the survey day as we had lots to see. The children have learnt to identify lots of different species of bird and we recorded sparrows, long tailed tits, coal tits, goldfinches and blue tits to name but a few.  We will be using all of this data soon in our maths when we start our data handling unit and we have also submitted our results to the RSPB.

We rounded off our hour of bird watching in true bird watching fashion with hot chocolate and biscuits

English
In Year 3/4, this term, Autumn 2009, we will mainly be linked to either our science or history work. We are involved in the ‘Talk for Writing’ project and each block of English will follow the format of ‘immersing’ the children in the particular type of text that we are looking at, before we expect them to produce any writing in that genre.

The children will be using their information writing block to create class books about mini-beasts. The children will collect information in their science lessons, and we hope to put what they find out to practical use to create an improved mini-beast habitat behind the Skylarks’ and Bitterns’ classrooms.

History
Our history topic is ‘Invaders and Settlers’ and the children will be writing newspaper reports about the invasion of the Vikings into 8th Century Britain. I can imagine that the choice of headlines could be very interesting - perhaps we should run a competition for the most imaginative ones!!

Letter writing is another focus, and our letters will be linked indirectly to our history project. We are linking with a primary school in the Shetland Islands, which will be very exciting. The Shetlands are steeped in Viking history, and our link school even has a Viking ship on their school logo! We will be exchanging letters with the children in Shetland, and may even do some collaborative story writing.

The term’s English will finish with some shape poems with a Christmas theme – a fun way to end the term hopefully!
