During the first half term, children will be concentrating on learning about the importance of healthy lifestyles; this will include a visit from the Life Skills Education Van. We will then move on to finding out about the different parts and functions of a flower and the lifecycle of a flowering plant. After half term we will spend some time finding out about the lifecycle of humans, emphasizing the different stages of development. During our trips out to the beach children will have the opportunity to extend their knowledge of living things and habitats, through a variety of cross curricular practical activities.

Art

The children will primarily focus on producing pictures using a variety of different media. They will be reproducing a photograph of a coastline using drawing pencils, charcoal, paint, oil pastels, and collage. We will be comparing the outcomes and discussing the different effects that the materials create. During the term, there will be opportunities in other subjects for the children to explore a variety of art media.

Maths

This term, Autumn 2009, Year 5/6 will be focusing on these areas of maths:
•    Place value
•    Addition and subtraction
•    Multiplication and division
•    Shape
•    Measures and handling data.

There will be an emphasis on ensuring that the children’s maths learning is given a cross curricular content, therefore allowing the children to have a context on which to hang their learning. Children will be encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning. They will have a greater understanding of what they already know and what they still need to know, in order to make progress within a given area of mathematics.

Aztec Day

On Tuesday 15th September, Year 5 and 6 took part in an Aztec Day. The reason for this was so that the children could have an introduction to the topic about which they will be learning this term. The main focus of the day was supposed to be a video conferencing session with an educational company called Mexicolore. Due to them being based in London, an outreach visit was deemed to far to travel, so video conferencing seemed a logical option. Unfortunately, due to technical issues on the part of Mexicolore, we were unable to partake in this on the day. Instead, the children were able to undertake a variety of different activities that enhanced their Aztec learning. They ground corn to make flour using a traditional method with stones. They were then able to make tortillas and salsa. Children were also able to create art based on Aztec designs. Thirteen Year 5 and 6 children from Shebbear Primary School also took part in the fun.
We are aiming to reschedule the video conferencing sessions in the near future so that the children do not miss out on this exciting opportunity.
