Autumn Term Brilliant Buzzards.

Brilliant Buzzard

7th January 2012.
Breanna has been awarded the Brilliant Buzzard certificate by her classmates this week for coming back to school and setting a good example to the rest of the class by, concentrating and trying her best. For being polite, helpful, good at sports, funny and a great friend!

13th January 2012.
Aidan has been awarded Brilliant Buzzard for trying his best, sticking to the class contract and being a good friend!.

Buzzards have been busy writing and putting together our class assembly, which is this Friday, 20th January.


Art
The children have been practising and developing their art skills and have produced some wonderful pastel landscapes of Bideford, inspired by the artist Nikolay Stoyanev.


Following that they worked on creating a self portrait using the style of his work.


Maths
During the first few week of this term the children have been developing and extending their knowledge of fractions, decimals and percentages. They will be moving on to look at ratio and proportion next week.


English
Our first English block this year is based on the genre of narrative writing, the children will be working towards creating their own version of The Town Mouse and The Country Mouse. This also links very nicely with them learning about and considering the differences between their home and surroundings compared with our capital city, London.


Autumn Term 2011


9th December

Wendy has been awarded the Brilliant Buzzard certificate by her classmates this week for always coming to school with a positive attitude and trying hard with her learning; for singing well during the Christmas rehearsals; for being enthusiastic, kind and a good friend!


Christmas
The children have been busy reheasing for their Christmas performance as well as taking part in other Christmassy activities. They finished their science topic on electricity by designing and making a Light up Nativity scene. This also incorporated a poem about the Nativity story which the children had produced during their RE and English learning.


Science
During science the children have been learning about and developing their knowledge of electricity.


 

7th December

2nd December
Chloe has been awarded the Brilliant Buzzard certificate by her classmates this week for being kind, caring, patient and helpful; for always coming to school with a positive attitude and being ready to learn; for listening to others and doing her best; and for being a good friend!
25th November
Jeannie has been awarded the Brilliant Buzzard certificate by her classmates this week for always coming to into school joyfully and jolly, is always ready to learn, has stuck to the class contract, puts her hand up and has a go and is nice to people!

Aztec Day
Our topic for this term, culminated with an Aztec celebration day! The children got to wear the costumes they had designed and made and perform their ‘Strictly Come Aztec’ dance routines. Lisa in the Kitchen organised an Aztec lunch and the children made decorations to give the dinner hall a colourful Mexican vibe!
The children have worked hard with their learning this term and enjoyed celebrating the fruits of their efforts!

Christmas Preparations
Over the next couple of weeks the children will be busy rehearsing for the Christmas performance and taking part in a host of Christmas events and activities.

23rd November 2011

18th November
Hannah has been awarded the Brilliant Buzzard certificate by her classmates this week for always coming to school with the right attitude, concentrating hard with her learning, doing her best and for being a good friend!

11th November

Nathan has been awarded the Brilliant Buzzard certificate by his classmates this week for trying his best and improving his work, sitting nicely in assembly, being confident and for being a great scientist!

Children in Need
We all enjoyed a day in our pyjamas to raise money for Children in Need!


D & T
The children have completed their Aztec costumes and are looking forward to wearing them in their 'Strictly Come Aztec' dance performances



RE and Art
As part of our religious education this term the children have been learning about the story of Moses and the 10 Plagues of Egypt. They chose one of the plagues and produced a collage using a variety of materials to represent it. The children will be presenting these in St Mary's church as part of the Bible Celebrations.


Science
For the final part of their learning about The Earth and Beyond, the children planned and carried out their own shadow investigations. They found out how shadows are formed and what happens to them during the course of the day.


9th November 2011

Brilliant Buzzard
This week the Buzzards voted for Jamie to be awarded our Brilliant Buzzard, for working hard with his learning, for being sensible, responsible, patient, kind and a good friend. He also helps people when their stuck and has followed the class contract!

Last week our Brilliant Buzzard was Chloe for always coming to school with a positive attitude, having good ideas, sticking to the class contract and for being helpful and patient!

Golden Time
The children in Buzzards have worked very hard this half term and have managed to fill the pebble jar twice! As they had accumulated two lots of Golden Time, the children decided that they would like to watch 'Despicable Me' as their treat. Some of the children even came prepared with pyjamas, slippers and teddies so that they could snuggle up and enjoy the film!


English
During our English learning over the next three weeks we will be looking at the genre of Information Text. The children will be producing an information text about the history of the Aztecs and their influence on Latin America.
Science
The children produced some wonderful projects on the Solar System during half-term and have presented them really well to the rest of the class!


Maths
Our maths topic for the next two weeks is Measures. The children will be extending and developing their knowledge and understanding of using and applying various units of measure in a range of both mathematical equations and everyday real life situations.

PE
The children have been working on their Latin American inspired dances, in conjunction with our Aztec topic, during our indoor PE sessions. Their routines are really beginning to take shape!
Our outdoor PE sessions have been spent learning and developing tennis skills.


19th October

Brilliant Buzzard
This week our Brilliant Buzzard is Scott; he was voted Brilliant Buzzard by his classmates for working hard with his learning, being a good friend and knowing his times tables inside out!

Last week our Brilliant Buzzard was Klay, chosen by his peers for being a good friend and concentrating on his learning.

English
In English the children have been looking at the features of Play script. Using a scene from 'Kisses on a Postcard' as their core text, the children will be producing their own play script which will depict a bullying incident and then how a resolution is achieved.  During the last two weeks the children have been completing a variety of tasks to help them achieve their end goal, including acting out various scenarios and then recording freeze frames of the key parts.


Science
In science the children have been working towards creating a short film to show to the KS1 children that will enable them to understand how to lead a healthy lifestyle and look after their bodies and teeth.


Maths
Our maths topic for the next two weeks is shape. The children will be practising and developing their knowledge and understanding of the properties of both 2D and 3D shapes, angles, symmetry and co-ordinates.

Lanterns
Burton Art Gallery are celebrating their  60th anniversary this year, as part of their celebrations they are holding a festival in Victoria Park  on Friday 28th October (Friday of half-term week). All of the children have been making willow and paper lanterns, so that those children who are able to take part in the lantern parade can take them with them.


5th October

In Buzzards class each Friday the children vote for who they feel should be awarded the Brilliant Buzzard award and why. Whoever is chosen is presented with a certificate and gets to wear a special rosette for the following week.
This week's award went to Sally for, concentrating hard on her learning, Improving her work and always sticking to the class contract.

Drum Crazy
The children took part in the first of our music year celebrations, a drumming workshop with drum crazy. They all had a chance to play a variety of drums and percussion instruments and put together a group composition which sounded fantastic!


Appledore Book Festival
On Monday 26th September KS2 had a visit from children's author, Jeremy Strong. He read some of his new book  Cartoon Kid: Supercharged and involved the children in a lively and active history of how he became a writer.

Team Building Event
The children in Years 5 and 6 spent the morning of Tuesday 27th September  at Moreton Park taking part in a Team Building Challenge; where they had to organise themselves into groups and complete a series of activities. The children all participate really well, the weather was on our side and a great time was had by all!


Topic
Our art and design technology project for this term is to design and make a costume that they can wear for our 'Strictly Come Aztec' dance performance at the end of the term. One of the activities that the Buzzards have completed this week, in order to practise and develop a variety of skills that will enable to achieve the end tasks was to produce an Aztec style mask.


Science
During the nice weather the children have been able to get out into the school grounds to investigate what living things they can find in the environment.


Kisses  on a Postcard
Following on from our visit from Terence Frisby, all of Year 5 and 6 went to the Queen's Theatre on Friday 30th September to watch his play, 'Kisses on a Postcard'.  The performance was wonderful and the children were very pleased to see one of their fellow school mates, Andras  Droppa  and Wendy's brother Jonah, on stage. Both of them carried out their role superbly! All of the children behaved impeccably and a great time was had by all!

21st September.
On Monday 19th September Terence Frisby, the author of 'Kisses on a Postcard', held a workshop in the school hall for each of the Year 5 and 6 classes;  in preparation for their trip to see the performance at The Queen's Theatre, Barnstaple. The Children were able to hear about what inspired him to write his play, as well as taking part in various activities to practise their dramatic skills!


The children enjoyed completing their comic strips; here are some for you to see.


We have now moved onto our next block of English focussing on the genre of narrative writing. The children will learn a core text of the shortened story of Star Snake, which tells the story of the history of the Aztec population.

In maths the children are spending the next two weeks learning and developing their skills in addition and subtraction, here are some of the children's thoughts that they already have about  addition and subtraction. They will continue to add to these as their learning progresses.


7th September.

Welcome to Buzzards Class! The staff who will be working in Buzzards this year are; Mrs Bunting, Mrs Barnes, Mrs Hockin, Mrs Burrows'-Bryan, Mrs Barrett and Mrs Gibbons.

Meet Barry the badger!


Barry the badger gets to go on lots of adventures; the children in Buzzards take it in turns to take him home with them in his little bag and help him write in his diary about the adventures he has had with them, sometimes he adds drawings, photographs or even objects that he has found on his visit!

The autumn term has begun and the children have settled in well!  We have been getting to know each other and, for most children, their new surroundings. They have talked about what will make their learning environment a happy and productive one and together we have put together our class contract.

Our topic in Year 5 and 6 this term is the Aztecs. The children will be learning about the Aztecs across a range of subjects.
During our English lessons for the next two weeks we will be learning about comic strip texts. The children will be writing their own comic strip, as the final outcome for this block, based on the superhero they have created.
The children will be learning and developing their knowledge and understand of place value through our current focus in mathematics.
Science learning for this term in Year 5 and 6 will be focussing on humans. The children will undertake a variety of investigations to learn about the function of many parts of the human body including; teeth, heart and lungs, bones and muscles. As well as learning about how to lead a healthy lifestyle
