British Values

At St Mary’s Church of England Primary, we teach British Values alongside our Christian values, helping children understand how to live well together in our community. These values are part of everyday school life and are reflected in the way we learn, play, and care for one another. For parents, this means children are supported to develop respect, responsibility, and kindness through clear routines and positive relationships.

British Values include democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. In school, children practise these values through class discussions, voting on agreed choices, following shared rules, and learning why boundaries matter. They also learn that everyone has the right to speak and be heard, while listening carefully to others and understanding that differences should be treated with respect and care.

We encourage parents to reinforce these ideas at home by talking about fairness, listening, and making thoughtful decisions. Simple conversations—such as discussing how rules help people stay safe, or how we can show respect for different cultures and beliefs—make a real difference. Together, we can help children grow into confident, caring citizens who contribute positively to school, local life, and the wider United Kingdom.
