Geography
Geography helps children at St Mary’s Church of England Primary understand the world around them, starting with their local area. Through simple, age-appropriate activities, children learn to observe places, describe what they see, and begin to use basic geographical vocabulary such as street, village, town, countryside, and landmark. They may also explore how people use land for different purposes, for example homes, shops, parks, and farms, and consider how weather and seasons can affect everyday life.
As pupils progress, they build confidence by learning about the UK and comparing it with other places. Parents can support this by encouraging children to notice maps, directions, and features when out and about, and by discussing where journeys begin and end. Using stories, photographs, and simple map games at home can strengthen understanding of place, location, and distance, helping children develop curiosity and respect for the world they live in.
