History
At St Mary’s Church of England Primary, we encourage our pupils to explore history in a way that feels meaningful and relevant. Learning about the past helps children understand how communities change over time, and how people’s choices shape the places we live in today. Through age-appropriate lessons, children build key historical skills such as asking questions, spotting differences between then and now, and using simple sources to find out what happened in the past.
Our history curriculum also highlights local history, helping pupils connect events and stories to their own area. By learning about local landmarks, notable people, and everyday life in earlier times, children gain a stronger sense of identity and belonging. This approach supports children in developing curiosity and respect for the wider community, while also strengthening vocabulary and understanding through clear, engaging learning experiences.
