Our aim is to provide pupils with a high-quality Mathematics education that provides them with a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically and stimulates their interests and curiosity. Our teaching ethos promotes growth mind set and pupils are encouraged to aim high and be resilient, valuing mistakes as an important aspect of the learning process.
The teaching of Mathematics across the school promotes discussion and encourages children to investigate, make links, reason and expand their understanding, developing the children’s fluency, reasoning and problems solving skills. Children are expected to answer discussions and problems in full sentences and are encouraged to show their understanding using images and resources, alongside abstract approaches.
A Mathematician from St Mary’s school will:
- Enjoy exploring Maths in a context and within a problem, developing their curiosity and enabling them to make links.
- Become fluent in the fundamentals of Mathematics so that they can develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
- Build on prior knowledge and be given opportunities to dig deep within a topic.
- Have plenty of opportunities to solve a variety of problems with differing representations and make rich connections across mathematical ideas.
